What to Wear to a Boudoir Shoot | Expert Tips

Hey Beautiful,

You’ve booked your boudoir session, you’re excited about the experience, and now you’re asking yourself, “What should I wear to a boudoir shoot?” You’re probably staring into your closet wondering what on earth you’re going to bring. Should you splurge on designer lingerie? Do you need matching bra and panty sets? What if you don’t normally wear lingerie at all? First, I want you to know that you have so many more options than you might think, and finding something beautiful doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune.

I absolutely love gorgeous lingerie, whether it’s a luxurious set from Agent Provocateur or Honey Birdette, something romantic from Victoria’s Secret, or an inexpensive little number you discovered on Amazon. I’ve photographed women wearing everything from high-end designer pieces to $20 lingerie sets, and I can tell you that a higher price tag doesn’t necessarily mean something will photograph better. Some of my favorite outfits clients have brought to their sessions have been surprisingly affordable! That’s actually one of the reasons I created my Amazon Storefront, where I share lingerie, accessories, and other fabulous finds that I think will look beautiful in boudoir photographs. All the lingerie featured in these photos was purchased from Amazon by my clients for their boudoir sessions. Every image is shared with the client’s explicit permission.

What Should You Wear to a Boudoir Photo Shoot?

The best outfits for a boudoir photo shoot are pieces that fit you beautifully, flatter the areas you love, and make you feel comfortable enough to enjoy your experience. Some of my favorite options include matching bra and panty sets, bodysuits, corsets, garter belts, stockings, sheer robes, oversized sweaters, and even simple white button-down shirts. You certainly don’t need to wear traditional lingerie to create gorgeous, sensual photographs. In fact, sometimes the simplest outfits create the most beautiful images because they allow your personality and natural beauty to take center stage.

When I’m helping clients choose their outfits, I always look at how a piece fits, the way the fabric moves, and how it complements their body. Something that looks amazing on a model in an online listing might not be the most flattering choice for your particular shape, and that’s perfectly normal. Fortunately, there are so many different styles available that we can find something that highlights the features you love. During your boudoir photography experience, I’ll help you decide which outfits will photograph best and guide you through poses that complement each look. You don’t have to figure everything out on your own!

Do You Need Expensive Lingerie for Boudoir Photos?

Absolutely not! Now, don’t get me wrong, I adore beautiful designer lingerie. Agent Provocateur and Honey Birdette create some incredibly gorgeous pieces, and there’s something special about the details, fabrics, and craftsmanship of luxury lingerie. If you’ve been dreaming about treating yourself to a fabulous designer set, your boudoir session is a wonderful excuse to do exactly that. However, I never want anyone to feel like they need to spend hundreds of dollars on lingerie to have beautiful photographs.

Over the years, I’ve seen some truly stunning inexpensive lingerie, including pieces from Amazon that look far more expensive than they actually are. The secret is choosing the right fit, fabric, and silhouette rather than focusing on the brand name. A simple black lace bodysuit that fits beautifully can photograph just as elegantly as a designer piece costing ten times as much. Personally, I love mixing high-end lingerie with affordable finds because it gives you more variety without making your wardrobe budget unnecessarily expensive. After all, your boudoir session is about celebrating you, not the label inside your lingerie.

Why I Love Amazon for Boudoir Lingerie

One of the biggest reasons I recommend Amazon to my clients is convenience, especially when someone realizes their session is coming up and they still need a few outfits. Life gets busy, and sometimes lingerie shopping ends up being the last thing on your to-do list. With Amazon Prime, many items offer fast shipping, which can be a lifesaver when you’re shopping at the last minute. Of course, delivery times vary depending on the item and your location, so always double-check the estimated arrival date before ordering.

Another thing I love is the ability to order several different styles and sizes to try on at home. Lingerie sizing can be wildly inconsistent, even between pieces from the same brand, so I always recommend checking the measurements and customer reviews before purchasing. If you’re unsure between two sizes, ordering both can save you some frustration, provided the items are eligible for returns. Be sure to check the return policy carefully because certain intimate apparel items may not be returnable. I’ve also found that trying on lingerie in the comfort of your own home is much more enjoyable than feeling rushed in a dressing room.

That’s why I put together my Amazon Storefront, filled with lingerie and accessories I’ve selected with boudoir photography in mind. Some are similar to pieces my clients have worn, while others are styles I think would look fabulous on camera. I’ve organized everything into categories to make shopping easier, whether you’re looking for something romantic, daring, playful, or simply affordable.

Please note: As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. I’ve personally curated these recommendations with boudoir photography in mind, and I may earn a small commission when you shop through my links, at no additional cost to you.

Matching Bra and Panty Sets Are Always a Favorite

You really can’t go wrong with a beautiful matching bra and panty set. They’re classic, versatile, and can create so many different looks depending on the color, fabric, and details. Black lace is always gorgeous, but I also love soft ivory, blush, rich jewel tones, and beautiful embroidered designs. A well-fitting bra provides shape and support, while the right panty style can highlight your waist, hips, and curves in a flattering way. High-waisted panties, cheeky cuts, and delicate strappy designs can all look fabulous, depending on the style you’re hoping to create.

One thing I always suggest is paying attention to how the lingerie fits when you move rather than just how it looks while standing in front of a mirror. During your session, you’ll be sitting, lying down, turning, and posing in different positions, so comfort and fit are important. You don’t want to spend your entire shoot adjusting straps or worrying about something slipping out of place. If you find a set you absolutely love, consider trying it on a few days before your session so you know how it feels. And remember, a matching set doesn’t have to be expensive to look luxurious in photographs.

Bodysuits Are One of My Favorite Boudoir Outfits

If you’re not sure where to begin, I almost always recommend trying a bodysuit. They’re incredibly versatile, and I love how they create beautiful lines in photographs. Some have plunging necklines, others feature sheer lace panels, and there are plenty of styles with gorgeous open backs or interesting details. A well-chosen bodysuit can highlight your waist, elongate your torso, and create a beautifully polished look without requiring multiple pieces.

Bodysuits are also wonderful for women who prefer a little more coverage around their midsection. I hear concerns about stomachs all the time, and while I never want you to feel like you need to hide any part of yourself, I completely understand wanting to choose something that makes you feel comfortable. A bodysuit can provide that extra bit of confidence while still looking incredibly sensual. Personally, I love photographing lace bodysuits because the texture adds beautiful detail without overwhelming the image. You’ll find several styles in my Amazon favorites, including affordable options that can create a very high-end look.

Garter Belts, Stockings, and Little Details

Sometimes it’s the accessories that take a boudoir outfit from pretty to absolutely fabulous. A simple bra and panty set can look completely different when you add a garter belt and stockings. I love the classic, feminine feel of these pieces, especially when paired with beautiful heels or a delicate lace robe. They add texture, interest, and another layer of styling that gives us more variety during your session.

Stockings and thigh highs are also a wonderful way to draw attention to your legs, and there are so many options beyond traditional black. Sheer nude stockings, lace-top thigh highs, and delicate patterns can all photograph beautifully. Just make sure anything with elastic fits comfortably and doesn’t dig into your skin more than you’d like. I also recommend trying your garter belt and stockings together before your shoot, since some combinations work better than others. A little preparation makes getting dressed on session day much easier.

Sheer Robes, Kimonos, and Statement Pieces

Oh, how I love a beautiful robe! Whether it’s a soft, romantic lace robe, a flowing sheer kimono, or an extravagant feather-trimmed creation, these pieces can add movement and drama to your photographs. They’re especially wonderful if you want a variety of looks without changing your entire outfit. You can wear a robe over a matching lingerie set, let it fall gently off your shoulders, or use the fabric to create beautiful movement in your images.

Some of my favorite boudoir photographs feature long, flowing fabrics because they add such a romantic, editorial feeling. If you’re drawn to something a little more dramatic, an over-the-top robe can be an amazing statement piece. On the other hand, a simple sheer robe can feel soft, feminine, and effortlessly beautiful. Amazon has some surprisingly lovely options at affordable prices, so you don’t necessarily need to invest in an expensive designer robe to achieve that luxurious look.

What If You Don’t Want to Wear Lingerie?

Here’s something I wish more women knew before booking a boudoir session: lingerie is completely optional! Some of the sexiest photographs I’ve created have featured a simple white button-down shirt, a cozy off-the-shoulder sweater, or a fitted tank top. There’s something so beautiful about an outfit that feels relaxed and natural, especially when we pair it with flattering light and thoughtful posing. If lace and garter belts aren’t your style, please don’t feel pressured to wear them.

An oversized shirt can create a wonderfully intimate look, while a soft sweater slipping off one shoulder can feel romantic and understated. Even a favorite pair of jeans with a simple top can work beautifully for a more casual, editorial-inspired session. The goal is to create photographs that feel like you, only perhaps a side of yourself you don’t get to see every day. If you’re curious about what the experience is like, my boudoir photography FAQ answers many of the questions women have before their sessions.

What Colors Photograph Best for Boudoir?

Black is probably the most popular lingerie color I see, and for good reason. It’s timeless, elegant, and works beautifully with almost every style of boudoir photography. However, I also love ivory, champagne, dusty rose, deep burgundy, emerald green, and rich navy. These colors can create a beautiful mood in photographs, especially when paired with delicate lace or satin fabrics.

When choosing colors, think about what makes you feel beautiful and what complements your skin tone. Ivory and champagne can create a soft, romantic feeling, while deeper colors often add richness and drama. Bright colors can be gorgeous too, especially if they reflect your personality, although I generally recommend being thoughtful about very busy patterns or overly distracting prints. Texture is often more important than color, which is why lace, mesh, silk, and satin are among my favorite fabrics to photograph. If you’re unsure, bring a few different options and we’ll choose what works best together.

What Should Curvy Women Wear for Boudoir Photos?

First, I want to say that beautiful boudoir photography is for women of every shape and size. You don’t need to lose weight, change your body, or fit into a particular lingerie size to have photographs you absolutely love. I’ve photographed women with all kinds of beautiful curves, and choosing flattering lingerie is really about understanding proportions, fit, and the areas you want to highlight. A gorgeous bodysuit, supportive bra set, high-waisted panty, or flowing robe can all be wonderful choices.

If you’re shopping for curvy lingerie, look for pieces with adjustable straps, supportive construction, and enough stretch to move comfortably. I especially love designs that define the waist, create beautiful necklines, and fit smoothly without uncomfortable digging or pulling. Don’t be afraid to experiment with styles you might not normally choose, because sometimes the most unexpected outfit becomes a favorite. My Amazon Storefront includes a category dedicated to curvy lingerie because I want every woman to have access to beautiful options. And during your session, I’ll guide you through posing and styling so you can relax and enjoy the experience rather than worrying about how to position your body.

How Many Outfits Should You Bring to Your Boudoir Session?

I usually encourage my clients to bring more options than they’ll actually wear. Even if your collection includes two outfit changes, bringing four or five possibilities gives us the flexibility to choose what photographs best. Sometimes an outfit looks gorgeous on the hanger but doesn’t quite fit the way you expected, while another piece you weren’t sure about turns out to be absolutely stunning. Having a few extra options means we can make those decisions together without any pressure.

I also love when clients bring a variety of styles rather than several outfits that look almost identical. For example, you might pack a classic black lace set, a beautiful bodysuit, a romantic robe, and something completely unexpected, like an oversized white shirt. That gives us different moods and styling possibilities throughout your session. If you’re still wondering what to expect, you can learn more about me and my approach to boudoir photography before we meet.

My Last-Minute Boudoir Shopping Tips

If your session is coming up quickly and you haven’t finished shopping, please don’t panic. Start by looking through what you already own because you may have some wonderful pieces hiding in your closet. Then, if you want something new, focus on a few versatile options rather than ordering a dozen outfits you’ll never wear again. A beautiful bodysuit, a matching set, and a sheer robe can give you plenty of variety without making shopping overwhelming.

For Amazon purchases, I recommend checking Prime delivery estimates, reading recent reviews, and looking at customer photos whenever possible. Pay attention to sizing charts rather than assuming your usual clothing size will fit. Once your pieces arrive, try everything on, remove any tags that might show, and make sure the outfits feel comfortable when you sit or move. I also recommend keeping your lingerie organized in a small bag so nothing gets tangled or misplaced before your shoot. Finally, avoid wearing anything excessively tight immediately before your session because elastic and straps can leave temporary marks on your skin.

Shop My Favorite Amazon Boudoir Finds

After photographing so many beautiful women in so many different styles of lingerie, I’ve learned that you never really know where you’ll discover your next favorite piece. I’ve seen gorgeous designer sets, inexpensive Amazon finds, and even everyday clothing create some of the most stunning boudoir photographs. That’s what inspired me to put together a collection of pieces I genuinely think are worth exploring.

Inside my Amazon Boudoir Lingerie Storefront, you’ll find matching bra and panty sets, bodysuits, garter belts, stockings, sheer robes, statement pieces, curvy lingerie, affordable lingerie under $30, body jewelry, and even skin and hair preparation favorites. I wanted to make it easy to find inspiration in one place, especially for women who don’t have time to spend hours shopping. Many of the styles are available with Prime shipping, which is especially helpful if your session is right around the corner.

One little shopping tip from me is to order a few styles you wouldn’t normally consider. You might be surprised by what you end up loving! Sometimes the outfit you thought would be your favorite doesn’t photograph quite as beautifully as something completely unexpected. That’s part of the fun of trying new things and seeing yourself differently.

The Most Important Thing to Wear to Your Boudoir Shoot

I could spend all day talking about lingerie because I genuinely love it, but there’s something much more important than what brand you’re wearing or how much you spent. I want you to arrive at your session feeling excited about doing something wonderful for yourself. It’s completely normal to feel a little nervous, especially if you’ve never stepped in front of a camera for this kind of experience. Most women I photograph aren’t professional models, and you certainly don’t need to know how to pose or have everything figured out before you arrive.

My job is to guide you through the entire experience, from helping you choose flattering outfits to showing you exactly how to pose. I want you to see yourself in a way that feels beautiful, confident, and completely authentic. Whether you’re wearing a $300 designer bra or a $25 Amazon bodysuit, what matters most is how you feel when you see your photographs. And if you’re still deciding whether a session is right for you, I’d love for you to explore the Couture Boudoir experience and imagine what we could create together.

So go ahead and have a little fun shopping, try something new, and don’t be afraid to choose a piece that makes you feel absolutely fabulous. Your boudoir session is about so much more than lingerie, but finding something you love can be a wonderful first step toward seeing yourself in a whole new light.
